Wurstküche Restaurant / Los Angeles, Ca

I’ve heard so many good things about it both on the news, online blogs and word of mouth that I had to check it out! So after this year’s RedBull SoapBox Race LA, some friends and I eagerly headed off to see what everyone was raving about.
Wurstküche (pronounced “vurst koocheh”) is located in the heart of the Los Angeles Art District as evident by this view across the street. It’s a pretty hip neighborhood, but I’m pretty sure it’s only a couple blocks away from skid row, so you might want to watch out late at night.
There are two entrances to get into the restaurant. The side entrance is the main entrance where you wait in line to order your food. It wasn’t too bad when we arrived since we left the RedBull event a little early, but the crowd soon grew to about 30 people waiting out the door in about 30 minutes.
You can also get into the restaurant through what we initially thought was the main entrance, but this is an exit for the most part. The only advantage you might see is that you’ll be able to swoop an early seat in front of all those people waiting in line to order. Just make sure there’s no one waiting for a spot or you’ll end up looking like an a-hole.
Once you get to the cashiers, the ordering process is pretty simple. Pick a sausage to your liking, toppings, side order (french fries are highly recommended), dipping sauces and drinks. You can pick up some eclectic root beers and lemonades, but it was all about import beer for us that day.
Sausages range from your standard bratwurst to exotics like snake, rabbit and even alligator! If you’re feeling adventurous, I highly recommend the rattlesnake.
I believe this is Tyler Wilson, the co-owner of the establishment. I’m starting to think that these hats are a prerequisite for being a restaurateur.  e.g. Brian Malarkey from Oceannaire.
Those bottles of Chimay will set you back $95, or you can settle for an $8 glass of Chimay white. You can’t go wrong either way.
Onto the main course! Seeing as we couldn’t think of any other restaurant that served alligator or rattlesnake sausages in Los Angeles, we went for the “exotic” sausages.  Gator on the left, rattlesnake in the midde and fries to top it off. For sauces, we opted for a Curry Ketchup and Chipotle Aioli.
Fries are very tasty and cooked well done.

Rattlesnake sausage was VERY good. Served with sour kraut and bell peppers. It’s got an amazing flavor and is a must have if you’re open to it.

Alligator left room for improvements. It was rather dry and the sausage lining was very tough to eat.

Standard sausage orders for the less daring. I'm sure they're awesome!

Don’t expect a “Please wait to be seated” sign any time soon. Seating is pretty tight and feels almost like a cafeteria for adults. First come first serve!

Overall, this is an awesome place to sit down and hang out with friends. The food was great, beer was awesome and I will definitely stop by again. One thing to remember when you go though. Make sure you order enough food for yourself.  There was only one waitress and a handful of busboys whose sole responsibility was to get the food to your table and clean up. Want to order some more food? Go wait in line!
